Eastern Michigan University and Grand Valley State University (GVSU) celebrated 15 years of a successful partnership on October 11 that brought Eastern's Educational Leadership doctoral program to the Grand Rapids area.

Hosted by GVSU, the event brought faculty, students, and staff from both schools together to enjoy the recognition and acknowledgment of the many fine accomplishments of the program.

During the 1997-1998 academic years, GVSU asked Eastern to consider bringing the Educational Leadership doctoral program to the Grand Rapids area. The partnership would provide an opportunity for advanced graduate study for graduates from GVSU's master's degree program in educational leadership. This request was largely based upon Eastern's program success and fine reputation for operating off-campus programming across the state.

Then President Lubbers at GVSU, and then President Shelton at Eastern signed a formal agreement on September 3, 1999.

After 15 years of operation, the partnership continues to flourish due to Eastern's Extended Programs and Educational Outreach division in concert with the College of Education's Department of Leadership and Counseling.

To date, the program has graduated nearly 40 students who are now providing outstanding leadership in both K-12 schools and institutions of higher education both regionally and nationally.
