Benjamin White (Special Education) has been appointed to the Council of Exceptional Children's Board of Directors as a student representative. His appointment is effective January 1, 2013. The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides professional development, advocates for individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice. The CEC is one of the Department of Special Education's principal accrediting bodies.
Tom Zimmerman (Leadership and Counseling) a student in the EMU Community College Leadership Program and English instructor at Washtenaw Community College, received the Distinguished Humanities Educator Award at the Community College Humanities Association's Central Division Conference, held in Iowa City, Iowa on October 11-13, 2012. Mr. Zimmerman is one of nearly 50 students who are enrolled or have graduated from the Community College Leadership Certificate Program launched in the Department of
Leadership & Counseling program in the past five years. The program is intended to enhance the professional development and leadership effectiveness of community college faculty and administrators aspiring to executive or instructional leadership positions in two-year institution of higher education.
Kelley Richko (Leadership and Counseling) and Ebony Jones (Leadership and Counseling) presented at the 2012 Annual Michigan College Personnel Association (MCPA) conference hosted in Detroit, Michigan on October 7-9, 2012. Nicole Johnson (Leadership and Counseling ) currently serves on the MCPA board as the Graduate Student Liaison and played a key role in the organization and success of the event.
