Supporting Student Mental Health and Wellbeing

As anyone who teaches these days is aware, students are often struggling around issues of mental health and wellbeing.  While faculty and staff are not mental health professionals, and should be careful not to cross lines outside their expertise, there are things we can do, and should do, to support our students.  This ranges from encouraging wellness practices (such gentle reminders to students to sleep and eat), class policies that prioritize student wellbeing (such as building in flexibility with course requirements where feasible), and being ready with referrals and support when students need more help.

This session with Oscar Alcaine, the Interim Director of CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) and Ron Flowers and Kati Lebioda (co-leaders of EMU’s Culture of Caring initiative) focused on the best ways we can support our students, commensurate with our roles on campus.

When: Wednesday, August 13 @ 3:30 PM
