Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 21-01, Sunday January 17, 2021 1:40pm

Report of shots fired – Suspects in custody - City of Ypsilanti - Off-Campus

Location: 200 Block of Normal St. Ypsilanti, MI 48197

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an incident of shots being fired in the area of the 200 block of Normal St., south of campus. The incident occurred on 1/17/2021 at approximately 1:40 pm.

YPD and EMU Officers responded to the area and learned that two unknown persons had discharged a firearm striking a house.  During the course of the investigation, two male suspects were identified and taken into custody. No EMU students were involved nor were there any reported injuries.

 **********Update to Timely Warning 20-06 – sent on December 15, 2020*******Reported Crime: Felonious Assault / Armed Robbery

Location: Putnam Meters Parking Lot, Eastern Michigan University Campus

Further investigation into this incident has revealed that the victim and subjects were acquainted with
each other. This was not a random meeting. The victim met up with the subjects at the location to
conduct a drug transaction. It was also discovered that there was no gun fired during the incident.

The investigation is continuing.

Timely Warning 20-06, December 15, 2020

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault/Armed Robbery

Location: Putnam Meters Parking Lot, Eastern Michigan University Campus

The Eastern Michigan University Police Department is currently investigating a complaint of Felonious Assault/Armed robbery which occurred on 12-12-2020 at approximately 4:42pm. The EMU Police Department was contacted this evening by a third party concerning this incident.

The victim, an EMU student, stated he was robbed of cash and prescription drugs. The victim reported that two suspects lured him over to their parked vehicle and demanded the victim’s belongings. The victim stated the driver of the vehicle had a handgun, which was fired once during the altercation. The victim is reporting minor injuries not related to the gun being discharged.

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored Chevrolet Trax.

Suspect #1- Suspect #1 was the driver of the vehicle and was reported to have been in possession of the gun. Suspect #1 is described as light skinned Hispanic male, approximately 17 years old, with medium length dark curly hair.

Suspect #2- Suspect #2 was the passenger in the suspect vehicle. Suspect #2 is described as a white male, approximately 17 years old with an athletic build and average length brown hair.

The suspects were seen fleeing the area eastbound from campus in the suspect vehicle described above.

 *******UPDATE, November 6, 2020*******

On November 5, 2020, the suspect in this incident was arrested by the Ypsilanti Police Department and turned over to the Eastern Michigan University PD.  Based upon the investigation, multiple charges have been authorized from the incidents that occurred on the EMU campus.  The subject has been lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending arraignment.

Campus Safety Advisory – October 30, 2020

Reported Crime: Indecent Exposure


Location: Halle Library and the Student Center


The EMU Police Department is investigating two reports of indecent exposure.

On Friday, October 23, 2020 at approximately 7 p.m. in the Student Center, an unknown male exposed and fondled his genitals.

On Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at approximately 8 p.m. in Halle Library, it is suspected the same male exposed and fondled his genitals.

The suspect is described as male, African-American, in his 30s.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

 Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 20-05, Monday, September 28, 2020

Report of Shots Fired and Damage to a Motor Vehicle, City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: 1000 Block of Huron River Drive Ypsilanti, Michigan

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an incident of shots being fired in the area of 1000 Huron River Drive, north of campus. The incident occurred on 9/28/2020 at approximately 2:15 a.m.

Officers responded to a large party in the area and learned that an unknown person had discharged a firearm striking a motor vehicle. There is no information at this time that reveals the motive of the shooter.

There is no description at this time of the subject that possessed and discharged the firearm.

No injuries were reported from this incident.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 20-04, Friday September 4, 2020

Reports of Shots Fired, City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Area of Leforge Road & Green Road

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating incidents of shots fired in the area of Leforge Road, north of campus. The incidents occurred on 9/3/2020 and 9/4/2020. There have been no reports of any person being injured. There is no suspect or related suspect vehicle information, however, there is a strong possibility it is gang related activity.

Off-Campus Timely Warning 20-03- Thursday, September 3, 2020

Armed Robbery, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: 1510 Washtenaw Avenue, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a complaint of an armed robbery that occurred Thursday, Sept. 3. at approximately 9:02 p.m. The reporting party called the incident in after a 10-minute delay.

The incident was reported as an armed robbery. The suspect entered a business and demanded money, and then fled westbound from the location.

The suspect was described as a Black male, between 40 and 50 years old and 6'2" in height. The suspect was reported to be wearing black jeans and a black Nike jacket with a red outline and a red swoosh. The suspect was reported to have had a black handgun and was carrying a bag.

Off-Campus Timely Warning 20-02, Friday July 31, 2020

Criminal Sexual Assaults, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a complaint of Criminal Sexual Assault which occurred in 2018 off campus involving a former EMU student as a suspect, Dustyn Durbin. Durbin was arraigned today on nine counts of criminal sexual conduct in 14A District Court stemming from seven women who were interviewed during the course of the investigation. All women involved were students at EMU. The incidents were believed to have occurred between 2014 and 2019.

Currently, Durbin is lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail where bond was set at $150,000 or 10% by the court. With the possibility of his release, the University has issued this Timely Warning and Trespass notice barring him from campus. Anyone observing the suspect on campus is requested to contact the EMU Police Department at 734-487-1222.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 20-01–January 8, 2020

Reported Crime: Robbery, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: Intersection of Washtenaw Ave and Cornell Rd (southwest of main campus), City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of a robbery at the intersection of Washtenaw Avenue and Cornell Road at approximately 7:40 p.m. last evening (January 7, 2020). The victim told police that a suspect approached him as he was walking on Washtenaw, near Cornell, hit him from behind with an unknown object, and took cash from him. The victim said the suspect then fled the area in a pickup truck in an unknown direction. The victim reported minor injuries. The suspect was described by the victim as an African American male and may have been with a Caucasian male at the time of the incident, according to the victim.
