On April 4th, the College of Health and Human Services honored its outstanding students at its annual recognition ceremony. The honored students, family members, friends and CHHS faculty members and administrators gathered to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of some of our finest students. Collectively, they represent students who excel in the classroom, and who are actively involved in program and professional activities that serve members of our community. We are proud that they chose to enroll in our programs, and we are confident that they will become leaders in their chosen fields.

  HPHP Students with Dr. Brenda Riemer

  • Rebekah Branham – Sport Management (Undergraduate)
    Rebekah is a scholar-athlete at EMU as a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. She has been named as a Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar Student Athlete, and plans to attend law school in the fall.
  • Erika Garant – Health Education (Graduate)
    Erika is a GA in the Office of Health Promotion, and a member of EMU’s chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma. She has been involved in a number of campus-wide health promotion activities targeting students. Erika has demonstrated a strong commitment to her graduate studies and the health education profession.
  • Katie Gonzales – Sport Management (Graduate)
    Katie has worked as the primary media contact for four EMU sports, and developed a social media strategy for EMU Athletics. In addition, Katie has worked on projects for EMU’s Board of Regents, created video projects, and worked on the official “stats crew” for the 2016 MAC basketball tournament and the 2016 MAC football championship.
  • Shannon Melvin – Athletic Training
    Shannon lives by the motto “take advantage of every opportunity you are given.” In addition to excelling in the classroom and clinic, she is the Vice President of the Athletic Training Student Organization and serves as the student representative on the Athletic Training Program Advisory Board. Her goal is to work with a Division I athletic program.
  • Andrew Pearson – Exercise Physiology (Graduate)
    Andrew has demonstrated many strengths as a student, a lab instructor, and a researcher. His interests primarily include the combined role of exercise and nutrition as preventative medicine. His goal is to pursue a Doctorate in Exercise Physiology.
  • Geoffrey Smith – Orthotics and Prosthetics
    Geoff has emerged as a leader through his commitment to his studies, as well as the O&P program and profession. His capstone paper is currently being reviewed for publication, and the life-like silicone models he developed are being used for the profession’s national certification exam.
  • Jaclyn Wallace – Public Health, Community Health Education Track
    Jaclyn will graduate Magnum Cum Laude this spring. She co-founded the Women’s Club Softball Team her first year at EMU, and has served as the team’s Vice President, Treasurer and Co-Captain. She has also been an active member and leader in Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Health Education Honor Society.

  Health Science Students with Dr. Irwin Martin

  • Shelby Dunn – Clinical Laboratory Science
    Shelby has consistently been a top performer in class. Because of her exceptional communication skills, she has developed strong bonds with her classmates, and has excelled in the hospital internship environment.
  • Dawud Ellayan – Clinical Research Administration
    Dawud has a Pharm.D degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology. He joined the Clinical Research Administration program to further expand his professional responsibilities to include clinical research coordination and pharmaceutical care. Dawud’s goal is to work in cancer research and the healthcare of cancer patients.
  • Melissa Flynn – Dietetics Coordinated Program (Graduate)
    Melissa is completing her degree via distance education from Wilmington, North Carolina. She is planning to obtain Board Certification as a Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition and provide private, individual nutrition counseling for children and families, specifically those at risk of obesity.
  • Jeannie Kibby – Public Health
    Jeannie is an enthusiastic learner, seeking every opportunity to expand her skills in and beyond the classroom. Through her extensive professional experience, Jeannie is able to bring unique insights and a real-world perspective to discussions. She has been an active participant in both the Health Administration Student Organization and Eta Sigma Gamma.
  • Jenna Levine – Occupational Therapy
    Jenna has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership both inside and outside the classroom. She is the president of EMU’s chapter of Pi Theta Epsilon, the national honors society for Occupational Therapy. She consistently excels in her studies and has successfully balanced her time between work, family, friends and school.
  • Samantha Lindberg – Therapeutic Recreation
    Samantha has gained a considerable amount of practicum and service experience while excelling in the classroom. She has been active professionally having served as a student representative with the Michigan Therapeutic Recreation Association, and has been a leader with the Student Therapeutic Recreation Organization at EMU.
  • Johnica March – Health Administration
    Johnica is currently an intern at the University of Michigan Hospital, Medical Care Information Technology, Chief Information Officer Administration where she supports the transition to the electronic medical record, manages databases, maintains the infrastructure and/or devices that help clinicians deliver patient care, and develops and works with web and mobile applications. Her future goal is to obtain her MBA.
  • Catherine Martikan – Human Nutrition (Graduate)
    Catherine is an outstanding student whose research interests are in sports nutrition, obesity and weight bias. She has used her EMU course knowledge and skills as well as her previous masters degree in psychology to design a curriculum on weight bias for use in healthcare settings.
  • Gretchen Wiese – Dietetics, Coordinated Program (Undergraduate)
    Gretchen has demonstrated many strengths in and out of the classroom. She is interested in dietary patterns (the Mediterranean diet) and chronic disease, bone metabolism, and the relationship between sleep and dietary patterns. Her long-term goal is to earn a PhD in Nutrition Science and become a professor.
  • Douglas Wilson – Aging Studies (Graduate)
    Doug received his MBA from Kent State University and has a diverse business background. His passion for working with seniors led him to pursue his Graduate Certificate in Gerontology. He began working with St. Joseph Mercy Senior Communities as part of his practicum, and has since been hired as a Community Sales Consultant in Farmington Hills.

  Johnathan Follebout with Dr. Michael Willaims

  • Julie Cain – Master of Science Degree in Nursing
    Julie is an outstanding student in the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program. She received her nursing doctorate from the University of Colorado. She recalls that she was taught that the best contribution she could make in nursing was to become an NP and offer accessible and affordable healthcare in the community.
  • Johnathan Follebout – Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
    Johnathan has continuously excelled in the classroom, and has a reputation of asking thought provoking questions that demonstrate his knowledge of the profession. His professors believe he will excel in his career as a nurse because he has a deep compassion and understanding for
    those he will be caring for.
  • Amanda Mastrofini – Master of Science Degree in Nursing
    Amanda has demonstrated exceptional skills and understanding of the knowledge needed to fully assess patient health problems, and then develop a treatment plan that holistically addresses the patient’s needs. Amanda will be an asset to the nursing profession as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner.
  • Taylor Trauth – Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
    Taylor is a second bachelor’s student who has excelled in the classroom. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, the Society of Pediatric Nurses, and the EMU Student Nurses Association. She has participated in moulage trauma simulations at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and served as a volunteer at the Michigan Medicine’s Birth Center and Surgical Family waiting room, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Children’s Organization of Southeast Asia’s Girls Shelter in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

  Social Work Students with Dr. Lynn Nybell

  • Katie Cox – Bachelor of Science in Social Work
    Katie is not only an exceptional student; she has also become a dedicated champion for social justice. She has been a proactive campus leader, particularly in the Social Work Action Alliance. Katie provided leadership for the organization’s racism and economic oppression film series, production and distribution of “Black Lives Matter” buttons, and the School of Social Work’s Social Justice Strategy sessions.
  • Christopher Singer – Master of Science Degree in Social Work
    Chris expertly guides the School of Social Work in its social media presence by writing several policies for its use, and managing the Facebook page. He is a committed student who presents as a strong team player and quiet leader.
