Fines & Fees

A courtesy notice is sent 3 days before an item is due. Overdue notices are sent beginning the first day after the item is due and are sent daily for 7 days.

To get in touch with Library staff about your account issues, please fill out the Library Account Inquiry Form and someone will contact you.

Overdue and Replacement Materials Fines

  • Books: $0.25 cents/day
  • Reserve Materials:
    • $1.00/hour (for 2 hour and 24 hour reserves)
    • $1.00/day (for 3 day and 7 day reserves)
  • Circulating media (Videos, DVDs, CDs, Audiocassettes): $1.00/day
  • Reference and in-house media: $1.00/hour
  • Interlibrary Loan materials: $1.00/day

If a book is not returned to the library within 40 days of the due date, it will be considered lost and a replacement cost (the average cost of the book as determined by Collection Development standards or actual cost of the item, whichever is higher, plus a $20 processing fee and a $10 lost book fine) will be charged.

If media or reserve materials are not returned to the library within 10 days of the due date, they will be considered lost and replacement costs ($100 or the actual cost of the item, whichever is higher, plus a $20 processing fee and a $100 lost item fine) will be charged.

Paying Fines and Fees

For books, once an item is considered lost, 40 days after the item is marked overdue, the fine will be forwarded to Student Business Services. Materials in good condition may be returned up to 1 year after the billing date for a refund of the replacement cost. No refunds will be issued for materials returned after 1 year. Exceptions to this policy are at the discretion of the Coordinator of Circulation Services, or Library Administration.

For reserves materials and media, once an item is considered lost, 10 days after the item is marked overdue, the fine will be forwarded to Student Business Services. If items are returned to the library after being forwarded to the Accounting Office, fines and processing fees are not refundable.

For all tech loans, once an item is considered lost, 4 days after the item is marked overdue, the fine will be forwarded to Student Business Services. If items are returned to the library after being forwarded to the Accounting Office, fines and processing fees are not refundable.

Appeals

The library considers all legitimate concerns about library fines and fees. Reasons that do not constitute a basis for appeal are:

  • Lack of knowledge of library policy
  • Disagreement with library fee structure
  • Inability to pay fees
  • Unwillingness to take responsibility for material loaned to a third party
  • Forgetting the due date
  • Non-receipt or untimely receipt of library notices
  • Being out of town
