How to Use Interlibrary Loan

Before Using ILL

Before requesting items through ILL, please read about what can be borrowed through ILL. Check Esearch to be sure the EMU Library does not own the item needed. Use MeLCat for fastest book delivery, and for A/V materials. Extended Programs students should check special delivery options.

Placing a Request

Patrons must register before using ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan system. Once logged in, select the type of request, complete the online form, and submit. For large numbers of requests, contact Joe Badics, Acquisitions Librarian, at [email protected] or [email protected].

Delivery

Average delivery times are one week for articles and two weeks for books. An e-mail message is sent when materials become available. Patrons can also Log in to ILLiad and select View/Modify Outstanding Request to check the status of requests. Print materials can be picked up at the Circulation Desk and checked out with an EMU ID. Articles received electronically will be delivered online in PDF format. Log in to ILLiad and select View/Download Electronically Received Articles to view articles online.

Due Dates and Returns

  • Most books are available for three weeks. The loan period is determined by the lending library, not the EMU Library. The due date will be stated on the front of the item.
  • All interlibrary loans must be returned to staff at the Library's Circulation Desk. Please do not return ILL materials through book drops.
  • Some lending libraries state that their materials cannot be photocopied or leave our building. In these instances, the conditions of use will be documented on the front of the material.
  • Electronically delivered articles will remain available for 60 days. There is no due date for most articles.
  • Note: The lending library reserves the right to recall materials before the due date. In this case, materials must be returned immediately.

Renewing ILL Materials

A renewal period of three weeks is usually permitted. A renewal can be requested online, starting 10 days before the due date and until the date the book is due. Log in to ILLiad and select View/Renew Checked Out Items. A renewal can also be requested through the Halle Library ILL Department by phone at 734.487.2596 or by email at [email protected]. In the event that the lending library denies renewal, the patron will receive an email telling them to return the item.

Overdue Fines and Other Penalties

All EMU library patrons, including faculty and staff, are subject to the overdue charges and penalties that are listed on the fines and fees page

Users with Interlibrary Loan materials that are 28 days + overdue are subject to:

  • $20 EMU library processing fee
  • Replacement costs and processing fees as determined by lending library.
  • All ILL transactions suspended
  • Borrowing & registration hold placed on university record. This hold blocks the ability to register for classes until fees are paid in full.

Failure to pick up ordered items may result in a $10 fine per item and the suspension of ILL privileges.

All fees are non-refundable.

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. The library reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
