Returning Students
What is a Returner?
Undergraduate students who have left EMU without graduating and wish to return to complete their degree program would be considered returners. Returner students would not have to go through admissions process again.
Eligibility
Only students who did not complete their degree are eligible for a Returner I-20. Student's applying for a new program will need to go through the admissions process through International Admissions.
- Students who have not attended classes in the last two years are required to fill out and submit the Undergraduate Re-enrollment Application.
- Students who were academically dismissed from EMU will need to fill out the Reinstatement Appeal form through UACDC.
- If the above two options do not apply, students can work directly with OISS to apply for a returner I-20.
Documents Required to Apply for a Returner I-20
- Fill out and submit the Returner Form
- Copy of Passport
- Copy of Visa
- Bank Statement(s) showing 12 months of liquid funds
- Affidavit of Financial Support Form

SEVIS Transfers and Visa Renewals
Student's who are studying at another SEVP approved institution, and plan to transfer their SEVIS record back to EMU will need to make sure that they have completed all appropriate steps before having their school transfer their SEVIS record back to EMU. Remember, if you are inside the U.S. and maintaining status, you do not need to apply for a new visa even if it has expired.
If a student is outside the U.S. and they still have a valid F-1 visa, they will not need to apply for a new F-1 visa. They can use their previous F-1 visa, and the returner I-20 to enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before the program start date listed on the I-20. If the F-1 visa has expired, the student will need to use the returner I-20 to apply for a new F-1 visa.
