Scholarship Intent

Library science in the 21st century is an interdisciplinary field drawing on and related to information science, education, historic preservation, information management, instructional design/learning theory, and other fields taught at EMU. The purpose of this scholarship is to support outstanding individuals engaged in the pursuits of managing, organizing, classifying and disseminating information or cultural artifacts in libraries and related institutions/organizations.

The scholarship fund is awarded to recipients who promote access to information in all formats (digital, print, media or objects), whether they be current librarians furthering their education or students interested in applying their EMU education to support of the mission of libraries and related institutions.

Annual Distribution of Funds

Three categories of nominations and applications will be considered. If high-quality nominations or applications from qualified candidates are received in all three categories or two of the three categories, it is expected that awards will be made in each category. When the number of nominations and applications exceed available funds, priority attention will be given to Tier 1 proposals, followed by Tier 2 proposals, and then Tier 3 proposals. Funds will be distributed to the highest quality proposals with the most likelihood of substantial long-term impact on libraries and/or to the students who make the most compelling case for the impact of the award on their preparation for future work in library and information sciences.

TIER I - Doctoral Student Fellowships

Recipients of the doctoral award must be seeking to enhance an established career interest in the library and information sciences and enrolled in or admitted to one of EMU’s doctoral programs. The fund supports tuition or stipends, generally in the range of $5,000-$12,000 per year.

Doctoral applicants may re-apply for up to a total of three years of support and must demonstrate satisfactory progress toward degree completion. Fellowship awardees are required to enroll full-time during the year in which the award is granted; full-time will be defined by the student's program of study, usually six to eight hours per semester.

TIER II - Master's/Specialist Student Stipends

Recipients of master’s and specialist level awards must be engaged in continued study and practice in a discipline related to library and information sciences, be pursuing research or service initiatives in a library or related setting, or propose a project that will enhance the services or mission of libraries in a library or related setting. They must have completed at least one semester at the graduate level and be enrolled for at least six hours at the time of application. A GPA of 3.2 or higher is generally expected. The fund provides stipends, generally in the range of $1,000-$5,000 per year.

Master’s level applicants may re-apply for up to a total of two awards. Stipend awardees are required to enroll full-time during the year in which the award is granted; full-time will be defined by the student's program of study, usually six to eight hours per semester.

TIER III - Undergraduate Incentive Grants

Undergraduate students who have completed at least thirty hours of coursework are eligible to apply for scholarship funds. They may propose or be engaged in a project that will enhance the services or mission of libraries, or they may have been employed within the EMU Library for a minimum of two semesters and demonstrate interest in a career related to library science.

The fund provides a stipend of $500-$1500. A GPA of 3.2 or higher is generally expected as demonstration of academic excellence. First time applicants will receive priority over previous recipients and applicants.

Process of Selection for Awardees

The University Librarian will advertise the availability of funds each December or early January. Applications and nominations must be received by March 18. Winners will be announced between mid to late April. The award can be paid to the student any time after July 1.
