Assistant Director, McNair Scholars Program

Years at EMU

Why You Like Working Here

The McNair scholarship program is funded by the Department of Education. We are a program that works with first generation, low income and underrepresented students that desire a Ph.D.. We are under the umbrella programs considered Trio, so we work with under-served populations. We provide counseling, academic support and opportunities to conduct research with mentors in the hopes to support the students.

As the assistant director of the McNair Scholarship Program, I am given the rare opportunity to really see the student’s lives transform. I think that as whole, higher education is a environment where students lives can change.

Favorite Campus Spot

For sentimental reasons, the Children’s Institute and Autism Collaborative Center are my favorite campus locations. Prior to its existing designation, this site housed Elizabeth Fletcher Elementary School. Having attended Fletcher in my primary years, the site brings back many wonderful memories.

Superpower

If I had a superpower, I would eliminate student income inequity. There are so many situations dictated by socio-economic status. To eliminate that, would change the trajectory of student opportunities.

Surprising Fact

There are three generations of EMU attendees within my family: my father, my daughter and myself.

Next Goal

I just passed the oral defense of my comprehensive exams, so I’m currently enrolled in my Ph.D. in Education Studies with a concentration in Urban Education Program. I look
forward to writing my dissertation and my goal is to move steadily toward the completion of my Ph.D. and continually serve as an inspiration to my children and others.
