Music Education

The EMU School of Music & Dance is home to one of Michigan's oldest and largest music teacher education programs. In music education, you will join one of EMU's proudest legacies. Graduates are successful in finding music positions right out of school and our alumni hold leadership positions in local school districts and in state and national organizations.

At EMU, all your classes and field experiences will be taught by fully qualified faculty who care deeply about students and who are committed to your success. The EMU faculty possess years of teaching experience and hold degrees from North America's most prestigious universities. Music education faculty are active in the field, authoring publications, conducting research, presenting at conferences, and serving as officers in state, national music organizations.

In the Bachelor of Music Education at EMU, you will prepare for the career of a professional music educator. You will choose one of two specializations, based on an area of teaching in which you wish to focus: instrumental and vocal. When you depart EMU you will be certified K-12 and will be well-positioned to accept any music position.

In the Master of Music Education at EMU, you will work with EMU's distinguished faculty to advance your current understanding of music teaching and learning. You will have the option of selecting either a thesis project, recital or a guided research/teaching project based on your own interests and professional development goals. You may complete master's courses in a variety of ways including online, and resideny options. Students attending EMU for their Bachelor degree may complete both the Bachelor's and Master's of Music Education degrees in five years total.
