Are You Ready for the Spotlight?
The EMU Opera program aids students in building skills in opera performance from the basics of stagecraft up through more advanced performance techniques empowering students with the necessary skills for successful careers in this highly competitive field.
Opera Workshop is open and available to all EMU undergraduate and graduate students. In the fall semester, students learn essential techniques for performing opera while preparing and performing operatic scenes. Students will receive training in acting, character development, text declamation, score study, blocking techniques, improvisational skills, movement, body awareness and physical expression as well as audition techniques and practices.
The winter semester of Opera Workshop features the performance of a staged opera. Operas may be cast through a live audition during the fall semester, which provides students the useful experience in preparing and giving auditions for operatic roles. The Opera Workshop experience will take the student through the process of preparing, rehearsing, blocking and performing operatic repertoire. Graduate assistantships may be available for students at the master’s level.
