The Bachelor of Music Therapy degree combines science, artistry, and caring; and guides the development and refinement of musical, clinical, and interpersonal skills to address a range of non-musical, therapeutic goals.

A Nationally-Known Program

As a music therapy student in EMU’s nationally-known program, one of only two in the state, you can get the skills and training you need to conduct the clinical and evidence-based power of music inventions to help a variety of people with special needs. Your studies in this program will include coursework, performance and 1,200 hours of clinical training that will make you eligible to sit for the national Music Therapist board certification examination. Our Bachelor of Music Therapy program is fully approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA).

Learn

Successful graduates of the Bachelor of Music Therapy program will have demonstrated musical, therapeutic, clinical, professional /ethical and research competencies (as identified by the American Music Therapy Association) and completed a minimum of 1200 hours of clinical training (including a minimum of 900 hours full- time clinical training internship).

Students learn the therapeutic potentials within the elements of music both biologically and psychologically and develop skill in applying those elements to specific therapeutic goals and objectives. Students learn to observe and record responses and interpret therapeutic effect while working with individuals and groups in our on-campus Music Therapy Center and in various community settings.

Music Therapy Equivalency [Post-Baccalaureate Certificate]

A Music Therapy Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program is offered for students interested in specialized studies that will lead to meeting the eligibility requirements to take the certification examination in music therapy administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Successfully passing this examination leads to the person being credentialed as a music therapist–board certified.

Opportunities

Graduates are eligible to apply for the Music Therapist- Board Certified (MT-BC) credential that enables them to provide music therapy services in hospitals, schools, eldercare centers, hospices, community mental health, health promotion settings and with a variety of populations.

Music Scholarships

Scholarships are available for incoming music majors. Awards are based on merit and financial aid, and will be determined at the time of audition.
