Mindfulness Practice Study Group - Winter 2017

Mindfulness has become quite fashionable in the past few years. There are numerous books on it. Google employees are encouraged to practice it. Facebook has a meditation. Every year in February, Silicon Valley tech firms come out and attend the Wisdom 2.0. It can be practiced as part of psychotherapy. The promise is to make us more efficient, productive and calm. However, is this mindfulness? How can you benefit from a mindfulness practice? In this seminar, participants will explore basic guided meditations. Discuss what mindfulness is and isn’t; and how it can be applied in our classrooms.


Three 60 minute sessions are offered: February 10, 2017, March 17th, and April 7th

Session 1
– Focus on Breathing and Defining Mindfulness

February 10, 2017 from 11:00am-12:00pm in Halle room 217   (during CONNECT 2017)

  • 3 minute Breathing Space – 3 minute guided meditation
  • Introductions – What is Mindfulness?
    • What are Mindful Activities?
    • How can this be applied in your life/career/classes?
    • Over the next month commit to doing 3 minute breathing space and a one mindful activity
  • Brief Body Scan Meditation
    • Discuss experiences
  • Breathing Meditation – guided meditation
Session 2 – Movement-Based Practices – Suggest participant bring a blanket or a towel

March 17, 2017 - 12:00-1:00 PM (Halle 109B)

  • 3 Minute Breathing Space
  • Check in - Discuss our commitment to our practice
    • How have we applied it in our life/career/classes? (Challenges)
  • Tuning into the body –
    • Full Body Scan Meditation – Followed by brief discussion
    • Walking Meditation – Followed by brief discussion
  • Discuss for final session.  Participants will either
    • Continue to commit to 3 minute breathing space and a mindful activity or
    • A Gratitude practice (I will select three from Tara Brach’s guided meditations)
  • Finish with a brief Gratitude Meditation


Session 3 – Gratitude Practices

April 7, 2017 - 12:00-1:00 (room Halle 109B)

  • 3 Minute Breathing Space
  • Check in - Discuss our commitment to our practice
    • What have been our challenges?  Or successes?
  • A reading from a mindfulness book.  (I will select this) – Followed by discussion
  • Gratitude Meditation (also knows has loving kindness or Benefactor Meditation) – Followed by a brief discussion.
  • Summarizing the Mindfulness seminars
    • What has been beneficial?  Or not?
    • How can we help each other continue our practice beyond this term?
  • Finish with a short guided meditation on compassion.
